There is much news to report this month, as BWH has moved forward with a number of issues dedicated to strengthening our organization for the future and insulating us from the significant shifts in the health care environment.
First, during February and early March departments throughout the hospital voted in favor of the formation of a new Physician Organization. The BWPO was approved as this
edition of PSU was going to press. The creation and formal approval of the BWPO unifies our medical staff under one roof for the first time.
Second, prospects brightened for a renegotiated agreement with Harvard Vanguard Medical Associates as the hospital and HVMA developed a preliminary agreement to carry us forward. The preservation of this 30-year relationship in a manner that was both responsive to our patients and financially sound was an important priority for hospital leadership.
Finally, the state has announced its plan for Harvard Pilgrim Health Care. Buoyed by strong performance in January and February, the state has agreed to move HPHC out of receivership. It has reassessed HPHC health centers and realigned its debt. We continue to monitor developments in this area quite closely and will keep you updated.
Throughout all of these machinations, you should be commended for your continued dedication to the patient. As you know, surveyors from the Picker organization will continue to monitor patient satisfaction throughout the month of March and this will be publicly reported next fall. Our goals to serve our patients cover both the technical expertise only an organization like BWH can offer as well as the emotional support that we should all strive to provide.
Finally, I would like to say a few words about two prominent researchers who recently lost their respective battles with illness. Eva Neer, MD, and Janice Pfeffer, PhD, represented the very best of this institution. Their prominence was generated from their innovative work and the respect of their colleagues. As we recognize their professional achievements we also extend our deepest sympathies to their families and friends. Each of these incredible individuals remind us of the remarkable impact we can each have on the lives and destinies of so many people.
